Ultrasound Update

Well we had our "dating" ultrasound today. Sibling Silver is measuring 8 weeks 4 days, so right on track. We saw a heart beat and little limb buds wriggling around. Its official, there's something cooking in there.

We told our parents tonight, and they were of course surprised but also super excited.

Anika didn't know what to think of her mom laying on a table with a woman pushing an ultrasound paddle around on her tummy. She's going to be in for a complete shock when her little brother or sister arrives, and there is no way to prepare her for the event.

Oh yeah, my due date is May 4th, 2013.

Late Night Grocery Run

Last night I made a late night grocery store run and returned with 3 different types of crackers, a case of ginger ale, and a bottle of Tums. I'm glad nobody I knew was behind me in the checkout line!

Surprise!

OK, loyal blog readers... I feel a bit sheepish here after the unintended foreshadowing with the topics of the last two blog posts, but I have some surprising news. Instead of beating around the bush, I'm going to just spit it out -I'm pregnant.

OK, so now that you've picked yourself up off your chair... yes this is not a joke. Over the Labour Day weekend I noticed that my period was a bit on the late side, but knowing my cycles are still regulating themselves I wasn't jumping to any conclusions. I don't know what prompted me to take a test, but I bought two dollar store ones the previous month, so I figured I didn't have much to lose. I did a double take as two lines appeared. DH was sleeping in that morning, so I had to wait 3 more hours to share my news with him.  He didn't believe me at first, so I repeated it the next day just to be totally sure. Yep, they were no squinters -two very dark lines looking back at me. Back up the bus! How does this happen? DH was only home for one night in the middle of August, and after all it took to get pregnant the first time!

Now what's next? This was so different from last time when I had my hand held through the entire first trimester.  I had to wait until Tuesday to get in to see someone at my doctor's office, and of course my own doctor was not available.  How do you explain this to someone who doesn't know your history? The woman I saw was great. She didn't see a need to run a beta or anything, the urine is all they go by. She made a referral for me to have a "dating" ultrasound at the end of this month, and to go back to my OB for prenatal care.

So here I am just 8 months postpartum, still breastfeeding, and about 7 weeks ish pregnant. I'm having some mild symptoms like before -just enough to remind me it's real. My sniffer is extra sensitive which makes poopy diapers extra stinky, I have that mild gnawing in my stomach when it's not full, my breasts are tender and I'm tired.

So, of course we are thrilled by this surprise gift, cautious yet because it's so early, but also a wee bit worried about some of the ramifications that we'll have to sort out. They really are minor things in the big scheme of things. I have just barely enough weeks when I return to work to squeeze in the 600 hours I'd need to take another maternity leave. That's assuming I am able to work up until a couple of weeks before my due date. Eeek that cuts things close. We'll also need to figure out our bedroom arrangements, and of course there are all the ups and downs that will come along with two babies just 16 months apart. Not quite Irish twins, but almost.

Anyway, that's getting ahead of ourselves. My ultrasound is booked for Sept 26th, so hopefully everything will look viable at that point (8.5 weeks or so by my one-night-stand calculations).
