After she tried to eat some grass at the park and an envelope at a
friend's house, I decided to just go ahead and start her on solids even though she's not quite 6 months yet. For
our first attempt with the cereal I put the bowl on the highchair tray
and she dipped her spoon in and brought it to her mouth all on her own.
She's since had some soft finger foods (papaya, cucumber, prunes, egg,
salmon, broccoli) and absolutely loves drinking from a real open top
cup. I just have to share this photo series:

Solids
Wow, Anika is nearly 6 months old already! Where did the time go? We are getting ready to start some solid foods. Exciting times in uncharted territory. For a while now she's been sitting in her highchair at meal times and playing with spoons, bowls, and cups. She watches quite intently and copies our chewing movements, and reaches and grabs for our plates. I think all systems are ready. I'll let you know how we make out...

Get Your Head Around This One
We had a bit of a scare this week. Anika saw the GP on Monday who thought her fontanelle was closed too early. When
her head measurement didn't increase from last month to this month, he was worried
that her brain would not have room to expand inside her skull. He called the pediatrician who got her in on an urgent basis on Thursday. The
pediatrician is less worried. He measured her head circumference 0.5 cm larger than the GP. He's just going to follow the growth
again in 6 weeks. If there's no growth he'll order a CT scan to investigate further. Worst case scenario, surgery is required to open the skull, but he said 90% of the time this is not the case, so that's less worrying. Never a dull moment...

A Familiar Visitor
Yesterday I started my first post-partum period. WTF? Already? I'm still breastfeeding around the clock. Anika is a week shy of 5 months. Booo! I really was hoping for a longer break than this. Alas, I think that only happens to people who are really fertile and want to space their kids closely but have to stop breastfeeding to do so.
So, I guess I'm "fertile" again for whatever it's worth.
