Passport

Wow, it feels like forever since I last blogged. I think it's been just over a week. There is so much to write about, where do I begin? This might be long.

Well, I'll start where I left off. The thrush. I think it is gone after two weeks on the medications. Lets hope it never comes back.

My father in law was out to visit for 6 days. This was night and day different from my MIL's visit. My kitchen and floors have never been cleaner. Still, it's always busy trying to pack in so many things during his stay. Now that I have no visitors in the house, there is some time for other things. Its nice to have some time to myself with the baby.

Anika is now 6 weeks old and has had some 3 hour stretches of sleep at night this week. This seems dreamy compared with what she had before. OMG, when she gets to 4 hours it will feel like nearly a full night's rest. She's plumped right up. I don't know her exact weight, but the rolls on her thighs tell it all. This is a thriving baby, there is no mistaking it.

DH and I have long talked of traveling in Europe. We decided that if our baby wasn't a fussy variety, we'd take the opportunity to travel while I had the time off work and she is at a good age for porting around. We started a savings account (for something other than fertility meds) and low and behold with that combined with the tax return from the medical expenses, we had enough to book our flights.

We took a trip to Victoria the other day to get her a passport. Silly really that a young infant needs her own passport, but they do. The form was fairly simple, but the photo requirements are very strict. No smiling, mouth must be closed, eyes open, and expression neutral. The face must be square on with no shadows and nothing visible behind the baby's head. Have they ever tried to achieve this with a newborn? It took us three sessions and several different attempts. We went with the bottom right one.

  1. love the pics. We had Elly's passport done at an early age too. Pretty entertaining and frustrating.

    Happy Travels.

If you get a baby carrier, my only recommendation is that you get something "like" and ergo. Meaning a kind where the legs wrap around you, as opposed to a snuggly where the legs dangle in front. The dangling one's aren't good for infant hips, certainly if you plan on carrying her for an extended period of time in something like this.

    Happy travels!

  2. Sooo cute SD!!! We travelled with LN10 at 5 months on a Disney Cruise in December and will be travelling with him to the Turks n Caicos at the end of March. And yes...enjoy the travels as much as you can while on mat leave!! Travelling is our passion and we hope that LN10 will love it as much as we do. He exceeded our wildest dreams with how well he travelled (despite being a fussy baby). I think its because mom and dad have ALOT more time for him than at home with all the errands we do in a day. But my advice is do NOT pack in a whole bunch of stuff to see in one day. Take it easy...make sure to stop and smell the roses! Let me know if you have any questions...got a bit of experience with baby travel already and I might be able to help you out.

  4. Thanks! It was both entertaining and frustrating to try to get the passport photo of her. The middle top one looks like she's saying "Who me? I've got nothing to hide Mr. customs officer."

Yes, I am planning to purchase an Ergo or Beco carrier before the trip. I'm going to try on a friend's carrier and see if I can find one second hand -they are expensive. I'd really like to travel light and get by without packing a stroller or carseat though.

As far as travel goes, we are going to be gone for a month and visiting just 4 locations, so about a week in each place. We have flights, train rides and bus trips in between. Neither of us are expecting to do much sight seeing.

  5. Love the pictures, Anika is so cute! Which countries are you planning to visit? I am sure you'll have a great time on your trip. I am holding off with my son's passport until we figure out his eye color:)
