I'd like to get my daughter a realistic looking baby doll for her first birthday, to help her with the transition of becoming a big sister. The catch is that I don't want something that makes noises, pees, has battery operated movements, or has a scent -just a basic doll. It has to be durable enough to withstand toddler play. I'm willing to spend $30-$50.
Little did I know how difficult it would be to find one that fits this bill. To top it off I'd like to find one the same gender as our baby to be (which we should be able to find out in another month or so). This will be much easier if we are expecting another girl, but if it's a boy then it's much harder to find a boy baby doll that meets all of the above. I also discovered that if you want the doll to be anatomically correct that doubles the price!
All the big chain toy stores and department stores have dozens of dolls, but they all sing or dance. I looked online and there were a few options of dolls without actions, but noticed that most advertized a scent and I'm really sensitive to perfumy scents. I visited our local specialty toy store to do a sniff test and unfortunately most were too strong. There was one brand that had a vanilla scent that I could live with if need be, but I'd really prefer to find one unscented if need be.
The search continues...

Scentd dolls?! OMG, what is this world coming to?! But, yes, I believe an anatomically correct doll might be hard to track down. Maybe on Amazon? Or a catalog that caters to therapists? We got Emily a basic doll- eyes open & close, she cries and laughs when squeezed...a bit scary at first- about $12 @ Walmart. The body is soft-stuffed...cte and simple. But not what you are looking for. Good luck!! - makana
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think of scented dolls - I'm sensitive to smells as well. I remember my sister's preemie Cabbage Patch smelled like baby powder, but I didn't know all dolls were smelly now. My son only has stuffed animals so far, which are mercifully unscented.
ReplyDeleteI ended up finding one that is gender neutral, but had to buy it as part of a whole set with accessories (car seat, swing, highchair, and feeding dishes). I figure I'll tuck the rest of the stuff away for a later date.
