No Go

Well, I just had my worst looking u/s yet. Day 2 and there is one 10mm dominant follicle... and only 3 follicles total between the two ovaries. The blood work was done, but it didn't pass the mustard either. Progesterone is too high.

The IVF cycle was canceled. At least this time I hadn't already dropped thousands on meds. But, I can't really say that it's all that comforting.

My RE has one more trick to pull out of his hat. Estrogen priming after this next ovulation. If luck is on our side we'll get to go ahead next month. If not, that's it for IVF.

  1. Already? I can't believe it. Is it possible that it was just a 'lazy' month for your ovaries, what with the early AF and all?I'm so bummed out for you.

The early AF is part of the problem with the elevated FSH. My body is already stimulating follicles for the next cycle before I even get my period.

So sorry it was such crummy news. That really sucks.Fingers crossed for you and Dr. H's plan! I know I always had a wide variation of follicles between months.xoxox

I'm sorry SD. Glad you're RE isn't out of ideas though...

This is what happened to me last months but with the cyst as an extra bonus. 2 follicles on the left..?? I bet you the D&C is messing up the hormones...

    crap! sorry to hear!
    DiXie, 01 March 2011 - 03:37 PM

I am so sorry to read this news SD...not fair.
    LisainSK, 01 March 2011 - 04:31 PM

No the D&C is not messing up my hormones. They are doing that all on their own.

    So sorry to hear this.

I'm so sorry, SD. Early dominant follicles (aka "cysts") and early ovulations are my nemesis, as you know, so I feel your frustration. It's bad enough to know this is going on but when it prevents you from even getting to take advantage of the available fertility treatments it's way beyond frustration. It's devastating. I hope the third time is the charm for you and you can get on with a new and successful cycle soon, but right now do all the crying you need to and maybe throw a few things as well. I'm really sad and pissed off for you but I know this isn't the last straw for our Silverdollar.xoxo

What?!?! This sucks SD and I hope your RE's trick works when you start this up again.

i came looking for your bw results, sounds more to me like you are still at the tail end of your last cycle and not the beginning of a new one and the 10mm follicle is really your leftover corpus luteum, that's why your progesterone would still be high. I had this happen many, many times. i got so tired of the cancellations that one cycle i asked them to monitor me to see if the follicle was indeed a follicle.

Oh Silver$ I'm so sorry. That's just crap

i'm so so sorry SD.. if i remember correctly wasn't there a bunch of follies seen on your last antral count? darn them, where did they go. our bodies don't seem to cooperate when we need them most. i'm glad he recommended a specific treatment plan and that you didn't spend any of the precious ivf-funds on this cycle yet.. small consolations for huge disappointments.. i actually didn't even know that early dominant follies were cysts- i had 2 8mm follies on my last antral count (CD1), which one of those resulted in pg.. i know it will sound 'far-fetched', but i will wish for such a miracle for you too. barring that, my fingers will be crossed and prayers said for the EPP

    Crapity crap crap.

DB -This is nothing compared to what you are going through.Conky -technically anything filled with fluid is a cyst, but usually when it is an active follicle they don't call it a cyst because that has a negative connotation.KL -This was not a luteal cyst, it was an active follicle. They look different on u/s. Active follicles are perfectly round while lutreal cysts are irregular -I've had these before too and usually they delayed my period. This time my AF was in full force and a few days early. I'm not sure why my progesterone was up.Karen -congrats again on your miracle PG.

Silverdollar, so sorry to hear that. It sucks! I wonder if you've ever tried a minimum stimulation protocol? I've read a bit about it. I guess it's been found to be a bit more successful for older women. I'm 42. They always had me on the highest dose 450 Puregon but I wondered if it might have worked for me to do a min stim cycle. Apparently for older women it produces less eggs but they are higher quality and they have better success with them. My second IVF, my doctor (not an RE) suggested we try estrogen priming instead of the BCP. As a result it ended up over-suppressing me so I had to take injections for 5 days longer than my first cycle (not too bad if you don't have to pay for meds but with me it cost about $450/day so an extra $2250 and 20 more injections. Suprisingly I ended up with the same # of eggs although one less fertilised and yet the grading of the embryos was higher than the first time despite the fact that I took stims longer. I do still wonder if a low stim cycle wouldn't have been better. Perhaps you've already tried one. I wish you the best of luck.

  3. Believe it or not e-star, I am only 33 years old. I did do some lower dose stims (150 every other day) with my IUI cycles, and actually did well on those (response wise). I asked my RE about just doing that again and doing IVF instead. He said it can be done, but he prefers to try aggressive IVF protocols. He is totally willing to go through to retrieval with 2 or more eggs, but with only one the odds are too low.
