We attempted a little camping trip recently and some easy paddling, baby style. We decided to go about an hour away from home to a campground where our friends have an RV, and the water is
exceptionally calm in the estuary.
Anika did really well thankfully. The
travel playpen was a perfect fit in the van. We all managed to actually
get some sleep, and our campsite neighbours were still our friends the
next morning.
Paddling was another first. She liked looking around from the boat, but
especially enjoyed trying to teethe on the paddle leash. Will we go
again? Probably, once we get through the mountain of laundry and sort
out an easier method of getting the kayaks onto the roof of the van. This was the first time in 6 months that I missed having my car.

These pictures are so cute! Did you have to do anything special to take her kayaking? Did you feel that she was secure in the boat? Does she just sit on your lap or between your legs?
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering because my husband and I have occasionally rented kayaks at a provincial park and we were talking about whether we could do it with baby in tow. I'm just afraid I'd feel completely paranoid with him along and terrified I was going to drown him somehow, even though he'd obviously be wearing a lifejacket.
She sat between our legs on the bottom of the boat and was quite secure, although I would not take her in rough water where a spray skirt would be required. She has a lifejacket rated for 10-25 lbs (hard to find when they are less than 20 lbs). The tricky part was what to do with her while loading the boats on and off our vehicle.
ReplyDeleteYou are MIGHTY MIGHTY brave Silverdollar!! We go camping in 2 weeks...well not quite camping...our RV is nothing short of a house on wheels...and the thought of tenting and kayaking makes my head spin! So glad you did it and came out of it with the desire to do it again! Good job!
