Nulliparahood

While lying on the stretcher waiting to be rolled into the surgical suite last month, my medical chart was left sitting on top of my chest. Having been left with no other reading material, and nothing else to pass the time, I did what any respectable patient would do, and opened it up my medical records for a quick read. The ObGyn’s note to my GP was on the first page. The first line struck me right away. It read “Thank you for the referral of his 32 year old nulliparous female”. I find this medical term an interesting way to describe my predicament. A nullipara is a woman who has never borne a child. It stems from the latin roots nullus no, not any + -para, from parere to bring forth. Yep that’s me in a nutshell. I’ve yet to bring forth anything. Try as I might I’ve never had a BFP. It’s amazing how my infertility history can be all summed up in one word. Just like many of you out there, I’m still looking for the secret to the primip club. Every stage of the journey brings new hope that it’s right around the corner. I’m still waiting and hoping to that some day I will graduate from nulliparahood, but for right now I might be a nullipara, but I’m not a nothing. Honestly, it's time to update the terminology. How about a new, more creative medical term for nullipara? Here's a few suggestions for you docs:

  1. Eek! Nulliparous female sounds like some sort of tiny, not very interesting, bottom-dwelling sea creature to me!! A new term is definitely required - Stick pee-er?

My last blood requisition read ... gravida 2 para 0. I felt like I was on the losing end of a tennis match.

:) Love all the name suggestions! I especially like the image of the bottom-dwelling sea creature. The tennis match made me chuckle too.
