Miscommunications

I consider myself a fairly intelligent person but gosh it's easy to get confused with the instructions. I called the clinic this afternoon asking whether my blood work indicated triggering tonight or taking more Gonal F. They called back and told me "do nothing tonight". I said in a surprised tone "Oh, so no Gonal F either then". The response was "No, the Dr. just said, don't trigger tonight." I said "so, I should take the Gonal F again then? (to me that is not doing nothing)". She said "yes another dose of Gonal F, and come in for an u/s scan tomorrow". Good thing I clarified that.

Then there is the HCG trigger shot. OMG I freaked out last night when I saw the size of the needle -it was so fat (22 gauge) and long (1.5"). I thought to myself how am I going to take this in my tummy without puncturing my bowel? So today I checked the packet again and, the giant one is for mixing and there is another smaller (1/2") one for injecting! LOL that would not have been a good mistake to make.

It's amazing people actually do this stuff and don't have more mishaps.

  1. LOL, I know what you mean! I am surprised that I didn't have any either! I always try to clarify too just to be sure but I still end up thinking oh shoot did they say this or that? Good luck with the u/s tomorrow!

I remember seeing those mixing needles and I was terrified until i realized it wasnt for injecting LOL

Wowsers, the nurse was not clear. "Do nothing" means take no action - at all. Very good thing you clarified. All the best with the trigger.

I have made some errors too already. I mixed up when i was supposed to get bloodwork done and when I was first watching the video of how to use one of the meds like you I thought the needle looked huge and scary until I realized that was just the one used to mix and there was a little one for injecting!
    Hope your IUI goes great!

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who looked at the mixing needle and almost passed out. I always think these things should be intuitive, so I read the directions last, after I'm completely mortified!

Good to know I am not the only one! I am now going to make it a habit to repeat back the directions each time. It is also such a relief that I don't have to stick that knitting needle sized shot in my tummy.

I was exactly the same. I used to get out my instructions over and over and triple check everything. Then I would second guess myself and phone to check and then panic all day that I'd miss the call back from the clinic. I think the protocol fog and waiting for callbacks was the most stressful part of IVF.
Thanks goodness you are nearly at trigger. The 2ww is stressful but at least it will all be done by then :)

You could give your trigger shot in the tummy?
Mine always had to be given IM and and therefore in the bum or arm :)
The instructions can be so overwhelming ,,, I often felt like a total tool when I would have to say "so let me get this straight ..."

I'm taking the trigger at 11pm tonight and will go back Monday for the IUI. The nurse walked me through mixing the HCG powder with the water using the big needle. Now it's all loaded in the syringe and ready to go with the smaller injecting needle in place. I told the nurse about the near mishap and she told me they actually had a patient once that did that. OUCH. She promptly took the larger needle I used for mixing away and disposed of it for me.

I'm glad to know the hcg shot is in the tummy...if it needed to be IM that would be harder to do.

I agree, it can be a little overwheleming. I remember thinking that IVF patients must have a much higher than average IQ !!
