It's Krawlin' Twins!

While riding the ferry home yesterday I spotted my hometown jazz singer Diana Krall and her kids. I quietly pointed them out to hubbie to respect her privacy.

"She's got twins?" he whispered back. "Yes", I said, "3 year-old fraternal twin boys".

"How old is she?" was his next query. "Let's see, we grew up in the same neighbourhood, and she was old enough to babysit some of my friends so I'd have to say she's mid-40's -maybe 46".

"Did she use IVF?" he pondered. "Well, she's never admitted it and claims that twins run in her family, but it does lead to speculation".

Lots of the celebs in their late 30's early 40's seem to have twins. What is in the water? Lots of Gonal-F I believe. Sometimes I wish a few more of them were open about it, but I can completely understand why they are not. The public scrutiny would be too much to bear on top of stress of cycling and maintaining a career.

Oh well, I secretly winked at Diana Krawl behind her back yesterday as salute from one infertile woman to another.

  1. I know exactly what you mean...In the beginning I thought I would be really bothered being asked if "twins run in the family". There's only one time that I said yes but felt horrible after...I felt like I was betraying all my IF sisters. So from then on as soon as they ask me, I always say we did IVF. And it feels great! I have yet to hear rude remarks after...Wether or not they say things behind my back after, I could care less... Same as you, I hope a lot of people would open up about their struggles to help educate the ignorant ones...

I would agree that when it comes to the large number of celebrities in their late 30's and 40's having twins that, as you put it, "a little Gonal F is in the water!" On the one hand, I totally get why they don't want to put it out there and they should have the choice not to divulge the truth if that's their wish. On the other hand, I think that because a lot of celebs don't reveal they used IVF, it can sometimes lead people to believe that TTC'ing in your late 30's and early 40's is easier than it appears. I admire Celine Dion's honesty about going through IVF multiple times.

Because DH is very sensitive about having done IVF, I'm always evasive when I answer those questions. And I do feel bad for my IF sisters. If someone has the courage to tell me about their struggles, then I share my experience, but for the most part I keep it to myself. It's too bad that there's this shame or stigma that goes along with having children that "God didn't intend" ("unnatural" or whatever stupid label you want to give it).

I would agree...wouldn't it be wonderful if many of the women out there who are held as role models and who are emulated actually said that they experienced infertility and talked about their struggles, too? It would do a lot to take away the stigma. I applaud people like Martie and Emily, the two sisters of the Dixie Chicks, who went through years of infertility treatments to conceive their children - and were open about it.

Also, while there is a lot of Gonal-F in the water, it is not the celebs taking it, it is more often than not their egg donors.

I think Neil Patrick Harris just announced that he and his male partner are expecting twins as well....now there we KNOW ART is involved LOL. The only thing I don't like about all this celeb twin business is that they glamorize it...

Diana Krall did have fertility treatment(s) at clinic in New York. She got pregnant with twins when she was 42. I read an article about it in a magazine some time ago.
